Larry E Smith

Mr. Smith brings to his clients 13 years of experience in government and two decades of private sector representation. He began his career as staff assistant to Senator Mark O. Hatfield (R-Oregon), which led to his appointment as Republican Staff Director of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. After nine years of service at the Senate, Mr. Smith assumed the position of Manager of Corporate Relations at Herman Miller, Inc., a leading American designer and producer of office furniture products. Mr. Smith was called back to government service in 1981, when he was appointed as Senate Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms. In 1983, he was elected by the entire Senate to be the Sergeant-at-Arms, the Senate's chief executive, law enforcement, and protocol officer, responsible for more than 1,300 Senate employees and managing a budget in excess of $80 million. Serving under Majority Leaders Howard H. Baker, Jr. (R-Tennessee) and Robert J. Dole (R-Kansas), Mr. Smith worked closely with Senators from both parties, counterpart officers in the House, and representatives of the Executive Branch. Following his tenure at the Senate, Mr. Smith became Senior Vice President and Director of the Government Relations Division of Burson-Marsteller. Thereafter he became a name partner at the firm of Johnson, Smith, Dover, Kitzmiller, & Stewart, Inc. Mr. Smith is the Founder and President of Legislative Strategies, Inc., a bi-partisan government relations firm representing a diverse client base on a broad range of issues before the federal government. A graduate of The American University, Mr. Smith holds a Master's Degree in government from George Washington University.
