Norman McClelland

Norman P. McClelland helped found the Goldwater Institute in 1988. He was chairman of the board from 1992 to 1994 and currently serves as vice chairman. McClelland serves as a member of The Joe Foss Institute Board of Directors, the University of Arizona Business School Advisory Board, the Arizona State University Business College Dean’s Council of 100, and the Session of Valley Presbyterian Church. In addition, Mr. McClelland is the president of Shamrock Farms, and the chairman of Shamrock Foods. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Mr. McClelland is married and has two children and seven grandchildren. Norman McClelland was a University of Arizona graduate who guided Shamrock Foods Co. for more than five decades, expanding it beyond dairy products and relocating the company to Phoenix from Tucson. He served as both chief executive officer and chairman of the family-owned business, including 45 years as CEO. McClelland was born in Tucson on June 21, 1927, the son of William Thomas McClelland, who emigrated from Ulster to Tucson around the time Arizona became a state in 1912. Ten years later, the senior McClelland founded Shamrock Dairy with a Model-T truck and 20 cows. Norman McClelland voluntarily handed over the CEO post to nus son Kent McClelland in 2012, staying on as chairman. McClelland earned dual bachelor's degrees in agriculture and business administration from the University of Arizona. He and his sister, Frances McClelland, were both alumni. In 2008, McClelland Park was built on the campus to house the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences. In 1992 the new Eller College of Management facility was dedicated and named McClelland Hall in their honor. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. McClelland, son Kent, daughter Kathe McClelland and stepdaughter Heather Helser, along with seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and his ex-wife Barbara S. McClelland.
