William Lee Hanley Jr

Right-wing oil & investment millionaire; Lexington Managment

William Lee Hanley Jr. of Palm Beach, philanthropist and former vice chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, in Greenwich, Conn. He was 76. Mr. Hanley joined Hanley Petroleum and Lexington Management Group in 1964. Mr. Hanley’s grandfather founded The Hanley Brick Co. in 1893, which utilized a patented kiln process to produce hard brick. To supply fuel for brick manufacturing, the family also formed an oil and gas company, Hanley & Byrd in Bradford, Pa. Later known as Hanley Petroleum Inc., it was to expand its acquisition, exploration and development of properties in the ensuing years, eventually to the Permian Basin in West Texas in the early 1950s. Mr. Hanley went to work for the family business, and ultimately would become chairman and CEO. The brick company was sold in 1986 by Mr. Hanley to Glen-Gery. He was Chairman of the Board for Greenwich Hospital, served as Chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and served as Chapter Chairman of the Young Presidents’ Organization (Metro New York Chapter). Mr. Hanley has served as Director on several boards including Regnery Gateway, Inc. and the Brick Institute of America. He was a trustee of the Boys Club of New York and is currently a trustee of the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich. He is Director and Treasurer of the J.M. Foundation. Mr. Hanley, who was known as Lee, was born in New York City. He attended Aiken Prep in Aiken, S.C., followed by St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. In 1964, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Yale University. He is married to the former Alice Hoffman and has five children and resides in Greenwich, CT. In addition to his wife Alice “Allie” of 41 years, Mr. Hanley is survived by five daughters: Carroll H. Goggin of Winter Park, Allison H. Frantz of Greenwich, Brooke H. Davison of Boulder, Colo., and Nicole Hanley and Merrill H. Curtis of New York City; and 14 grandchildren. His parents, William L. Hanley and Elizabeth Niles Hanley, as well as a grandson William Sargeant Frantz, predeceased him. He was born January 27, 1940, in New York, NY.
