Before assuming the role of Acting Assistant Secretary for Financial Markets, Karthik Ramanathan served as Director of the Office of Debt Management beginning November 2006. In this role, Mr. Ramanathan provides policy recommendations for matters related to Treasury debt management and issuance. The office also monitors financial market and economic conditions, provides advice regarding the capital markets, engages institutional investors and oversees the regulation of the government securities market. Mr. Ramanathan began working at the Treasury in July 2005. Prior to joining the Department, he was at Goldman, Sachs & Co. working in the New York and London offices as a dealer in the Foreign Exchange market. He focused on cash and derivative transactions for both G7 and emerging market currencies. Prior to this role, he worked as an investment banker specializing in mergers and acquisitions also at Goldman Sachs. Mr. Ramanathan graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Economics and Mathematics. Originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, he currently resides in Washington DC with his wife and their three sons.
