Served as a state field director for Sen. Tom Harkin's 1992 presidential campaign, after serving as deputy field director in Harkin's 1990 U.S. Senate race. Campaign manager for Barack Obama's 2008 Presidential Campaign and partner, since 2000, at the campaign consulting firm AKP&D Message and Media. The firm was aligned both with Obama's 2008 Presidential bid as well as his 2004 Illinois Senate campaign. Prior to this Plouffe and fellow AKP&D partner worked on Deval Patrick's successful 2006 campaign for Governor of Massachusetts. Plouffe began his work in electoral politics with Senator Tom Harkin's 1992 campaign for re-election. Later that year Plouffe also managed Massachusetts Senator John Olver's first (and successful) re-election campaign. During the 1990s he also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Robert Torricelli's successful campaign for Senate. From 1997 to 1998 he served as Senator Richard Gephardt's Deputy Chief of Staff and from 1999 to 2000 was the Executive Director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during which he raised a record $95 million for House of Representatives candidates across the country.
