Major supporter of arts and educational causes in Indiana and the wife of retired Eli Lilly and Co. chairman Sidney Taurel. Taurel was a native of Brazil and spoke five languages — Portuguese, German, French, Spanish and English. She was one of the founders and longtime board member of the International School of Indiana, founded in 1994 to provide multilingual education to children. The school was recognized last year by The Washington Post as one of the most challenging schools in America, with top grades, test scores and graduation rates. The Taurels also contributed to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Opera and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She also served on the ISO’s board and endowed two chairs in the orchestra — the principal flute and the assistant principal second violin. Kathryn Taurel was born April 16, 1955 in Brazil. She is survived by her husband, Sidney; children Alex, Patrick and Olivia; two grandchildren; parents Jose and Estella Fleischmann; and a sister, Nicole Fleischmann.
