She is the ancestral daughter of five Mayflower Pilgrims, and her grandfather founded L.L. Bean, Inc., with a $500 loan. More than a century later, L.L. Bean is a billion-dollar business that is still owned by the Bean family. Ms. Bean is a prominent Maine political activist, and she ran as a Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988 and 1992. She is a graduate of Antioch college.
