Robert Congel, a Skaneateles resident and founder of Syracuse-based mall giant Pyramid Companies, died Wednesday February 3 2021 at age 85. Congel's company built malls across New York state and the northeast, including Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius, which has changed ownership multiple times in the decades since it opened. In 1990, the company opened Carousel Center mall, later renamed Destiny USA, in Syracuse, when the company expanded it into one of the largest shopping complexes in the country. Congel owned a mansion on Skaneateles Lake and was the owner of Savannah Dhu, a 3,929-acre conference center and wildlife reserve in the Wayne County village of Clyde, when the Noble Road property was listed on the website of Sotheby's International Realty in 2019 for $65 million in 2019.
