He grew up on the Upper East Side, earned a bachelor’s degree and an M.B.A. at Harvard, and then served as an officer in the Navy. In 1955, he married Barbara Furrer, and they had three children. She died in 2006. In the early 1960s, after a short stint in investment banking, Mr. Goodman joined the family business, becoming president of Ex-Lax Inc. at age 32. He sold the business several years later, reportedly for $40 million.
