US Representative for Georgia's 6th district, Lucy McBath was elected in 2018, ousting Republican Karen Handel. McBath is a member of the New Democrats Coalition. Although she holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and interned for Doug Wilder, then member of the Virgina Senate, she started a career outside of politics, working as a flight attendant for Delta, and relocating to Atlanta. Her return to politics and activism was sadly prompted by the loss of her son who was shot and killed following an argument at a gas station in Florida. The shooting and its aftermath received national attention and brought to the fore the controversial stand-your-ground-laws. Following the tragedy, McBath joined and led various gun control advocacy groups . She also campaigned actively for Hillary Cliton's 2016 presidential bid.
