Larry Montgomery, who led the aggressive expansion that transformed Kohl’s Corp. from a regional, mostly Midwestern chain into a nationwide retailer, has died. The former chief executive of the Menomonee Falls-based firm died Aug. 15 2019 at his home in Laguna Beach, California, at age 70. Montgomery took Kohl’s from 213 stores when he became CEO in February 1999 to a 1,000-store chain spread across 48 states when he stepped down in August 2008. Mr. Montgomery served as Vice Chairman from March 1996 to November 2000 and as Executive Vice President of Stores from February 1993 to February 1996. He joined us in 1988.
