The Smith Energy Company founder is a cancer and lung-disease survivor, and this latest $50 million gift to Texas Children's Hospital is one of many the Smiths have contributed to medical-care institutions in Texas. Last year they donated to a variety of cultural and literacy groups, health-care charities, human-service organizations, and nonprofits that help women.
