As a boy, Randall Onstead Jr. sacked groceries and cleaned floors at one of the grocery stores in the Randalls chain co-founded by his dad, the late Robert Onstead. After initiating the sale of Randalls to a private-equity firm in 1997, Onstead stayed on as CEO for two years before Safeway acquired it. Since then, he's served as everything from managing director of an investment banking firm to president and CEO of Garden Ridge. He left Houston for a new challenge as CEO of a Florida-based grocery chain. At his Jacksonville headquarters, he oversees almost 700 supermarkets in eight southeastern states under the names Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie. He became chairman the next year and in 2012 was named CEO of Bi-Lo Holdings. In 2013, Bi-Lo bought 22 Piggly Wiggly stores in Georgia and South Carolina and converted them to the Bi-Lo name. In 2014, it completed the purchase of 165 stores from the Delhaize Group for $246 million in cash. The company now has 830 stores in eight Southeastern states. In March 2015, Randall Onstead stepped down as president and chief executive officer of Bi-Lo Holdings, parent company of Winn-Dixie. Onstead currently serves on the Board of Directors of Baylor College of Medicine, Haggen Food and Pharmacy, Source Refrigeration, Bi-Lo Food Stores, and the Onstead Foundation. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Food Marketing Institute and TOPCO Associates. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Onstead earned his Bachelor degree in Marketing and completed Harvard University’s Program for Management Development. Onstead is married and has two children.
