Curt Engelhorn

For 36 years headed pharmaceutical companies Boehringer Manheim and DePuy. In May 1997 engineered their sale to Roche for $11 billion. Made $4.4 billion on the deal. Engelhorn, whose mother was American, sponsors the Heidelberg Center for American Studies at the University of Heidelberg, funding it with a yearly donation of more than $500,000. Also supports the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim. Great-grandson of Friedrich Engelhorn, founder of German chemical company BASF. Studied chemical engineering in Texas after World War II. Retired to Switzerland with fourth wife, Heidemarie.
