David Weinberger is a general partner of O’Connor Partners and former managing partner of its predecessor, The O’Connor Partnerships, a pioneering mathematical trading firm that merged into Swiss Bank in the early 1990’s to form the core of the current UBS Investment Bank. He then spent a decade as a Senior Advisor to UBS and an occasional consultant to others in using a variety of mathematical concepts in finance. Through his roles at O’Connor and UBS, he was responsible for the deal linking Santa Fe-based Prediction Co. with UBS, and was an advisor to and Board member of Prediction. In 2005 UBS formally acquired Prediction Co. in its entirety. A former mathematician and member of the External Review Committee of the Princeton University Mathematics Department, he has served on the Board of Trustees of the Santa Fe Institute since 1994 (with one year off for good behavior) and was a member of its Executive Committee from 1996–2002. From 1976 until leaving to join The O’Connor Partnerships in 1983, Weinberger worked with Robert Rubin at Goldman Sachs in the risk arbitrage, equity options and index futures areas and established a number of Goldman’s early equity-based mathematical trading activities. Before becoming involved in the financial markets, Weinberger did mathematical research at Bell Laboratories from 1973-1976 and spent the academic year 1975-1976 teaching at Yale University. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University (1973), where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and received an A.B. degree magna cum laude in mathematics from Princeton University (1969), where he was one of twenty-five University Scholars so designated in each class.
