Former attorney Bruce Karsh cofounded Oaktree Capital Management with Howard Marks, now also a billionaire, in 1995. With Marks, raised $1 billion when they sold 16% of their money management firm on a private Goldman Sachs exchange in May 2007. The firm was recently valued at $5.7 billion. In August, Oaktree and Marc Lasry's Avenue Capital acquired the assets of the troubled Sea Island resort. Before Oaktree, Duke alum served as assistant to SunAmerica chairman Eli Broad until 1987. With wife donated $20 million to Duke in 2008 to support international students. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law Schoo in 1980; Martha Karsh graduated in 1981. The couple have previously donated to the law school; this gift pushes their cumulative total past the $50 million mark. Overall, the Karshes have given more than $250 million to educational institutions.
