Craig Roberts Stapleton was nominated by President Bush as Ambassador to France and took the oath of office from Secretary of State Rice on June 27, 2005. On July 25, 2005, Craig Roberts Stapleton met with President Jacques Chirac at the Elysee Palace to present his credentials as the new United States Ambassador to France. This is Ambassador Stapleton’s second ambassadorial appointment. Previously, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2001-2004. In addition to his government service, Ambassador Stapleton has had an extensive business career. He has served as President of Marsh and McLennan Real Estate Advisors of New York since 1982. He was also a partner of President Bush in the ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989-1998. In 2004, he served as Connecticut State Chairman for the re-election campaign of President Bush and in 2005 he served on the Board of Directors of the Allegheny Properties, Metro PCS, TB Woods and Winston Partners. Ambassador Stapleton has many civic interests. He is President of the Vaclav Havel Foundation in the United States. He was awarded the Jan Masaryk Medal for service to the Czech Republic. He also served on the Board of the Peace Corps under President George H. W. Bush. His charitable involvement has focused on education. He has served as Trustee of the Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut, and oversees the Visiting Committee for Harvard College. Ambassador Stapleton was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his secondary school education at Phillips Exeter Academy and a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Harvard College. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Ambassador Stapleton and his wife, Dorothy Walker Stapleton, maintain their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. They have two adult children: Walker Stapleton and Wendy Reyes. Mr. Stapleton served as United States Ambassador to France from 2005 to 2009. He also served as United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2001 until 2004. Mr. Stapleton served as President of Marsh and McLennan Real Estate Advisors of New York, a commercial real estate firm, from 1982 until 2001. He has been a co-owner of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team since July 2009 and was a co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989 until 1998. Mr. Stapleton has served as a senior advisor at Stone Point Capital, a private equity firm, since June 2009. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the George W. Bush Library and Foundation since January 2006, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center since January 2009.
