Scott Paterno is the youngest son of revered Pennsylvania State University football coach Joe Paterno. Paterno earned his bachelor's degree from Penn State in 1997 and his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in 2000. He worked at the law firm of Morgan, Lewis and Bockius from 2000 to 2003 and served for several months in 2003 as counsel to state Senate Majority Leader David "Chip" Brightbill. Scott Paterno won his first run for elected office in Pennsylvania's six-way 2004 Republican primary in the 17th Congressional District with 27 percent of the vote, or about 5,000 ballots. He lost to incumbent Democratic Rep. Tim Holden in the November general election.
