Former Laureate Education Inc. CEO Douglas Becker, a well-known Maryland entrepreneur, is at the helm of Tempe-based Cintana Education LLC, established to help nonprofit universities outside the U.S. grow and develop. U.S. universities will become part of the Cintana Alliance and offer coordinated academic programs that allow students to earn degrees across multiple institutions. The startup's first client is Arizona State University. Becker, who is founder and chairman of Cintana, collaborated with ASU President Michael Crow to start the new venture. It's the latest in a long line of companies started by Becker, a Baltimore native who co-founded Sylvan Learnings Systems Inc. in 1989 and saw it become a large K-12 tutoring company. He also co-founded investment firm Sterling Partners. Becker stepped down as CEO of Laureate at the end of 2017. Douglas L. Becker a director since April 1999, has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Laureate Education, Inc. (a company in the education industry) (formerly Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc.) since February 2000. He is also Founder and Principal of Sterling Capital Partners, an investment company. Mr. Becker was a director of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) from October 1998 to April 1999. He was the Founding Chairman of Port Discovery, the Children’s Museum in Baltimore, where he still serves as a director. Mr. Becker has served on such nonprofit Boards as the Baltimore Museum of Art, Greater Baltimore Committee, Economic Alliance of Baltimore, Enoch Pratt Library, Gilman School, University of Maryland Foundation, and FIRST – an international robotics competition which inspires student interest in math and science. He established the Sylvan/Laureate Foundation in 1997.
