Laureate Education enrolls over 243,000 students at schools throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia in programs that range from traditional liberal arts to hospitality management. The company went private in 2007 through a consortium of investors led by the company's chief executive, Douglas L. Becker. The company runs a network of more than 75 accredited campus-based and online universities with 800,000 students spread across six continents. It claims to be the leading global network of higher-education institutions. The company in 2013 received a $150 million investment from International Finance Corp., an arm of the World Bank, to encourage postsecondary education, especially occupational training, in developing nations. It hired former President Bill Clinton to serve as honorary chancellor, a paid position in which he makes visits to foreign schools on Laureate’s behalf. Other notables who have made presentations include former Vice President Al Gore, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
