Dr. van der Horst received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently serves as Associate Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UNC, and is Director of the Division’s Fellowship Training Program. He is Visiting Professor of Internal Medicine at University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and University College Dublin. Charles van der Horst’s research interests are HIV in Africa and the US and the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. He is currently principal investigator of a CDC-funded study examining the factors influencing the morbidity of HIV positive women who are breast feeding in Malawi, identifying possible interventions to disrupt HIV transmission and examining methods of weaning and weaning foods.
