Mascia launched the predecessor to UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina — Physicians Health Plan — in 1985. More than 10 years ago, he decided to leave the chief executive role, though he planned to remain as chairman and take on new roles in executive development and international operations for Minnetonka, Minnesota-based parent firm UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). Mascia's LinkedIn profile listed him as president of Mascia & Associates, a role he began in 2005. His work was described as team-building, executive coaching, strategic coaching, meeting facilitation "and other services that help individuals and companies improve performance." In recent years, he held numerous volunteer roles, including president of the Greensboro Police Foundation and president of the Guilford Battleground Co. In 2009, Mascia took leave from the board of the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation to serve as the organization's interim president.
