James S Fulghum III

Dr. James S. Fulghum III attended NC State University, graduating with a BS degree in Zoology (Pre-Med) before entering UNC School of Medicine in 1967. His MD degree with honors was awarded in 1971. That year he began a residency in Neurological Surgery at Duke University Hospital, completing my year as Chief Resident in 1977. That summer, he joined Dr Leroy Allen, Dr. Lester Adcock, and Dr. Carroll Mann as a new partner at Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic. In October of 1990, he was called to active duty with the US Army after Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. He was able to re-join his private neurosurgical practice in May 1991. Following his return, he decided to focus my clinical practice on spinal reconstructive surgery. After a renal transplant in 2006, he has confined his medical practice to performing epidural spinal injection procedures in my office fluoroscopic suites. Since 1988, he has been the managing partner of Deep River Farms, LLC. This is a 200 acre family owned farming enterprise in Chatham County principally involved in the poultry business. The farm has the capacity to raise 80,000 chickens and have been in continuous business growing for Perdue Farms, Golden Poultry, and Pilgrim’s Pride until the recession of 2009 forced the bankruptcy of Pilgrim’s. The farm continues to grow timber and will remain in the poultry business as the agricultural products market recovers. Dr. Fulghum currently serves on the Board of Directors of the John Locke Foundation, the Board of Trustees of Montreat College, and the Board of Directors of Gardens on Glenwood Homeowners Association. He is a past president of the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society and Raleigh Academy of Medicine.
