Clayton Mathile

Pet Food billionaire

Ohio native got start as Campbell Soup accountant, soon after took general manager post at 5-employee pet food firm Iams in 1970. Became president, chief executive before buying company 1982. Expanded business with premium puppy chow; focused on nutrition, high-end breeders. Sold out to Procter & Gamble for $2.3 billion in 1999; was the largest acquisition in P&G history at the time. Wife runs Mathile Family Foundation; annual proceeds go to Dayton community projects. Promotes entrepreneurship through Dayton business center Aileron; founded with $30 million donation 1996.
