Kathy Murphy is president of Personal Investing (PI), a unit of Fidelity Investments, the largest mutual fund company in the United States, the No. 1 provider of workplace retirement savings plans and a leading online brokerage firm. Ms Murphy assumed her current position within Personal and Workplace Investing (PWI) in January 2009 and reports directly to PWI president, Abby Johnson. Prior to joining Fidelity, Ms Murphy was chief executive officer of ING US Wealth Management from 2006 to 2008. In her role, she was responsible for leading the Defined Contribution, Defined Benefit, Retirement Solutions and Rollover, Fixed and Variable Annuities, and ING Advisors Network businesses, as well as thousands of employees and distribution partners. From 2003 to 2006, Ms Murphy was group president, ING Worksite and Institutional Financial Services with responsibility for the Retirement Services, Employee Benefits, Institutional Capital Markets, and Reinsurance businesses. She began with ING in 2000 and became general counsel and chief administrative officer, US Financial Services. Ms Murphy began her career with Aetna Life Insurance. During her 15 year tenure with the firm, she held a variety of government affairs and legal positions of increasing stature and eventually acted as general counsel and chief compliance officer, Aetna Financial Services. Ms Murphy received her bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in economics and political science from Fairfield University in 1984. She earned her juris doctorate with highest honors from the University of Connecticut in 1987. Currently, Ms Murphy sits on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of America’s Promise and serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Connecticut Foundation.
