At the start of the election cycle, Conway talked to several Republican candidates, including Rand Paul, Scott Walker, Rick Santorum, and Carly Fiorina, about joining their campaigns. She spoke to Lewandowski, too, but she ended up working for Keep the Promise, the Ted Cruz super pac. Keep the Promise had an important supporter, the conservative hedge-fund manager Robert Mercer, who donated more than ten million dollars to the pac. Conway said that working for Cruz was “a geographic decision, because the Mercer super pac is in New York.” But she also knew Mercer’s daughter Rebekah, who leads many of the family’s political efforts. “Rebekah’s a very close friend of mine, personally,” Conway said. |
