Oracle plans to expand Hillsboro work force

Gov. John Kitzhaber will tour Oracle's Hillsboro offices Tuesday and announce the number of new jobs the Silicon Valley company will bring to the state.

Enterprise computing giant Oracle Corp. plans to announce Tuesday that it will be retaining jobs in Hillsboro that the company had contemplated moving out of the country, and will bring additional jobs to Oregon as well.
Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber plans a news conference this morning at an Oracle computing office in Hillsboro. Neither the governor's office nor Oracle would provide specifics of the announcement in advance.
But Tim Raphael, the governor's spokesman, said that Oracle will be announcing that it will retain some Oregon jobs that had been at risk of moving to Mexico. He said the Silicon Valley company will be bringing some additional jobs to Oregon, but Raphael declined to say how many ahead of the governor's announcement.
Oracle acquired its Hillsboro offices in 2009 when it purchased Sun Microsystems. Those operations originated with Floating Point Systems, an Oregon supercomputing company that went bankrupt in 1991. Floating Point's Oregon operations cycled through a succession of corporate transactions that ultimately led to Sun and then Oracle.
Sun had once employed 600 people designing and manufacturing servers in Hillsboro, but had reduced that number by at least 42 through a 2009 layoff that predated the sale to Oracle.
It's unclear how many remain there now, though the governor's office said Oracle has "hundreds" of employees at its Oregon offices -- which include sales personnel at offices in Corvallis and downtown Portland. Oracle did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking details. |
