ICHOM: Realizing the Full Potential of Value-Based Health Care
The mission of ICHOM, the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement, is to unlock the potential of value-based health care by defining sets of global standards for outcome measures that really matter to patients for the most relevant medical conditions—and by driving adoption and reporting of these measures worldwide.
ICHOM
The Boston Consulting Group reached an important milestone in value-based health care with the collaborative launch of ICHOM—a not-for-profit organization. BCG cofounded ICHOM with professor Michael Porter of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School and Martin Ingvar, former dean of research at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
ICHOM grew out of the conviction that the universal development, tracking, and reporting of patient outcomes by medical condition is the single greatest way to transform delivery systems. In 2009, Professor Porter and BCG’s Stefan Larsson began discussing a partnership to accelerate outcomes measurement efforts worldwide.

By developing a system that can measure health outcomes with accuracy, ICHOM is creating a dynamic in which patients can ask doctors questions about their health and doctors can give data-driven answers. This supports informed decision making, reduces health care costs, and improves the overall quality of health care.
