Tulsa Public School Students Compete in National VR Debate
Tulsa Public School Students Compete in National VR Debate
JUN 12 2020
During the first week of June, several Tulsa Public Schools students participated in a virtual reality debate competition through Tulsa Debate League.
This competition was hosted by Democracy Builders, who partnered with FCC, Comcast, Cox, Facebook, and Qualcomm to bring high school debate to virtual reality. On Friday, June 5, the final debate between the Tulsa Debate League and Boston Debate League took place, and it was a lively virtual affair.
Five well-respected judges oversaw the event, including Tulsa Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist, Boston-area Professor of Education Stacy Birdsell, and CBS News Anchor Anne Marie Green.
The event was a success, and students really enjoyed it.
Ross Faith, executive director of the Tulsa Debate League, said, "We were thrilled that Tulsa was chosen to participate in this groundbreaking educational program. Our students stepped up to the challenge and showed that debate can be a powerful part of the VR future."
Will Rogers Senior High student Jamaica Reed was the top speaker in the tournament and took home 2nd place honors overall.
She said, "The VR tournament was very fun, and it allowed me to improve skills I didn't know were lacking. I honestly believe I became a better debater because of this experience."
When asked about which skills she improved, Jamaica responded by saying her speech, critical thinking, summarizing, and teamwork skills.

If you are interested in debate for yourself or your student, the Tulsa Debate League has an upcoming camp this summer. Sign up here.
