COMMITMENT TO ACTION
Taking the Civic Justice Corps to Scale
Commitment by The Corps Network
In 2011, The Corps Network (TCN) committed to increasing employment in Service and Conservation Corps, specifically the Civic Justice Corps (CJC), by 1500 in two years. Formerly incarcerated and court involved youth (ages 16-24) will be engaged in CJC, where they will receive 6 months of intensive training and then will be placed in full time employment or post-secondary education. Intensive support, services and educational opportunities based on individually designed plans will continue over an 18 month period. CJC will allow these individuals to become leaders and problem solvers, while also reengaging in education and developing the life and work skills necessary for employment and postsecondary success. Furthermore, this service corps experience will reduce recidivism (prevailing rate 50-70%) to 10 - 15% as documented in its initial pilot.
