Notes | Business Magnate. Born the son of Hamilton Fish into a prominent New York family, he was president of the Illinois Central Railroad from 1887 to 1906, its period of greatest expansion. In 1906, after a long legal battle, he was ousted by E. H. Harriman and promptly joined up with the competition, in this case, the Missouri Pacific Railroad, owned by the notorious Jay Gould. |
