Professor in Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. I research cognition and the social aspects of esports and multiplayer online videogames. More recently, I have been involved in esports analytics and survey research, methods for assessing online social interaction, design and evaluation of an academically enriched high school esports league and curriculum, gender and toxicity in esports fandom communities, games for second language acquisition, and parenting gamers. I am actively involved in field-building efforts in game design and game studies programs in the United States and abroad, including advising federal agencies and foundations on their game-based investments, enabling partnerships across academics and industry, and better educating the public about games as an intervention and, perhaps most importantly, new art form.
