Goods Why shouldn't Theodore Sizer feel at ease? His brainchild, the Brown University-based Coalition of Essential Schools, founded in 1984, now has approximately 400 member schools across the nation. And Re:Learning, a joint venture combining the resources of the coalition with the Denver-based Education Commission of the States, is also faring well. Moreover, Sizer, along with James P. Comer of Yale and Howard Garner of Harvard -- all education innovators -- last month received a multi-million grant from the nonprofit New American Schools Development Corp., a year-old group that is an outgrowth of President Bush's "America 2000" education plan.
