Background
General Paul J. Kern, Gen. U.S. Army (ret.) serves as a Senior Advisor of Homeland Security and National Defense at Battelle Science & Technology International. He was a Vice President at Battelle. Gen. Kern has been Senior Counselor of The Cohen Group since January 2005. Gen. Kern served as the President and Chief Operating Officer at AM General, LLC from August 2008 to January 2010. Gen. Kern served as Business Advisor at The White Oak Group, Inc. In November 2004, he concluded his more than 40 year career in the United States Army when Gen. Kern served as a Commanding General of the U.S. Army Material Command (AMC) from October 2001 to November 2004. He retired from active duty in 2005. In June 2004, the Secretary of Defense tapped Gen. Kern to lead the military’s internal investigation into the abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Previously he served four years as the Department of the Army Military Deputy for Research, Development and Acquisition. As a Commander of the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Gen. Kern led a drive to digitize and transform its war fighting capabilities. In this capacity, he was responsible for research and development, sustainment and support to procurement for the entire United States Army. With a staff of over 50,000 civilians and active military members, Gen. Kern’s efforts were directed at supply chain improvements, maintaining field readiness and modernizing weapons systems throughout the Army. Some of his efforts also included consolidating major munitions production operations, employing radio frequency identification and managing the supply of rebuilt equipment for the front lines. In 1996 and 97, he was the Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division, Mechanized, where they developed the organization, tactics, techniques and equipment implemented in today’s networked force. From 1993 to 1996 he was the Senior Military Assistant for Secretary of Defense Mr. Bill Perry and played a key role in International deliberations in South America, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and the Balkans. In 1991 he led the 2d Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division in the attack into Iraq. He began his career commanding operational units as a platoon leader and troop commander in the Blackhorse Regiment in Vietnam. He served as the Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology and was the Senior Military Advisor to the Army Acquisition Executive and the Army Chief of Staff on all research, development and acquisition programs and related issues. He supervised the Program Executive Officer system and served as the Director of the Army Acquisition Corps. Gen. Kern held three combat tours in his career with two tours in Vietnam as a Platoon Leader and Troop Commander and he commanded the Second Brigade of the 24th Infantry in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Gen. Kern also served as the Assistant Division Commander of the division after its redeployment to Fort Stewart. He serves as a Member of the Defense Science Board at United States Department of Defense. In his career, he received the Defense and Army Distinguished Service Medals, Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals for valor, three Bronze Star Medals for service in combat and three Purple Hearts. He is a Member of the Board of Managers and Director at CoVant Management, Inc. He serves as a Director at LGS Innovations LLC. He serves as Member of the Advisory Board at Neokinetics Corporation and AM General, LLC. He serves as Member of Military Advisory Board at CNA Corporation. He serves as a Director of A-T Solutions, Inc. He served as a Director of Exelis Inc. since October 2011 until May 29, 2015.
