Carroll once hosted a daily television show called “Ask E. Jean” on America’s Talking, a cable channel run by Roger Ailes, who went on to run Fox News. She wrote for “Saturday Night Live” in the 1980s. She was born Betty Jean Carroll in Indiana. She attended Indiana University, where she was crowned Miss Indiana University in 1963. Carroll eventually changed her name to Elizabeth Jean and then shortened it to “E. Jean” for her first byline in Esquire.
