Gay marriage remarks, citation of satire. In July 2013, Ulery participated in an email thread with other state legislators. While originally about gun laws, the thread turned to gay marriage, which Ulery said would lead to "multiple partners" and bestiality despite gay marriage supporters calling such a claim, in his own words, "silly and foolish." Ulery referred to examples that he believed backed up his statement, but were in fact works of satire, including one published by The Daily Currant. House colleague Timothy Smith (D) brought the distinction to Ulery's attention, saying that "talking about multiple partners and bestiality does indeed make folks look foolish."
