An architect by training at UC Berkeley in the late 1970s, Robert Lalanne entered large-scale construction management right out of college then transitioned into real estate development in the early 1980s with Pacific Union Co. and Lincoln Property Co. In the late 1980s and early 1990s he formed development companies with investment bankers Babcock & Brown and retail and housing developer Jon Volckmann. In 2000, he formed The Lalanne Group, which built the $17 million 113-unit Lofts at Albert Park development in San Rafael. A few years later, after Novato residents petitioned for a Whole Foods Market store, Lalanne teamed with frequent residential development partner Signature Properties of Pleasanton to build homes and ancillary retail around the store, located at what is known as the Old Pini Mill.
