For 23 years, prior to his retirement in 2002, Dr. Glen O. Toney served as a top executive with Applied Materials, Inc. As group vice president of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Toney was responsible for Applied Materials’ corporate philanthropy, community relations, public relations, governmental affairs and employee communications. Before joining Applied Materials, Dr. Toney spent a decade in education, as a director of the education opportunity programs at San José State (1969-70), as assistant to the Superintendent of Schools in the Cupertino Union Elementary School District (1970-72), and as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Ravenswood City School District (1972-73) and the Palo Alto Unified School District (1973-79). Previously, he worked as a programmer and mathematical modeler for Lockheed Missile and Space, Inc. (1965-69) as well as serving for two years (1962-64) in the U.S. Army’s Missile Division. Dr. Toney holds bachelor’s degrees in philosophy from California State University, Chico (1966) and in mathematics from San José State University (1973), where he also earned his master’s in instructional technology/curriculum development (1971). He earned his doctorate in organizational behavior with a minor in higher education from the University of Southern California (1975).
