R Martin Chavez, PhD

Joined the amfAR board in February 2008, having been adjunct member since 2006. Serves on audit committee. Expertise in investment banking, financial analysis, and fiscal oversight. A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dr. Chavez has had a bicoastal career. In 1985, he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a bachelor's degree in biochemical sciences. He has a master's in computer science, also from Harvard. His doctorate from Stanford University is in medical information sciences and was awarded in 1990. He has been a founder and “C-level” executive for several start-up companies, including Quorum Software Systems in San Francisco and Kiodex, Inc., in New York City. He was also global head of energy derivatives at Credit Suisse Financial Products. Subsequently, in New Mexico, he served on the board of PNM Resources, Inc., chaired its finance committee, and sat on its audit and ethics committee. He currently serves on the board of the Santa Fe Opera as chair of the endowment committee, a member of the executive committee, and a contributing member of the finance committee. He began his career at Goldman Sachs in 1993 as a senior energy strategist, left in 1997 to explore other options, and returned in 2005 as managing director of Financial Group Strategies. Overseeing Investment Banking Division Strategies globally and, in the Americas, structuring for the Securities Division, he became a partner in 2006. He is co-head of the firm's Hispanic and Latin network and serves on the firmwide diversity committee and the Goldman Sachs gay and lesbian network. Managing Director, Goldman Sachs & Co.
