General Partner of Institutional Venture Associates and also the General Partner of Technology Venture Investors, which manages $270 million in four funds and focuses on start-up investments in electronic technology companies in the Western United States. He was an active researcher in laser research while working for his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering at Stanford and received numerous awards, among them, the Alfred Nobel Prize (awarded by 5 engineering societies) in 1964 and fellowship in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1969.
