She earned a master's degree in radio and television from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1977, and landed her first television job at a station in Baton Rouge, La. Zinga put her broadcasting career on hold in 1978 to study in England for a year as a Rotary International Fellow in Journalism.She has since worked as reporter, anchor and producer at stations in five states. Zinga's stops included three years as an anchor at CNN, where her work the night of the Olympic Park bombing in 1996 earned an Emmy. More than half of her television career was spent in the Quad Cities, where she was working as an anchor when she decided to leave broadcasting to campaign for Congress.
