Bill Wasserman died on Sept. 29, 2021. A 1950 Harvard graduate, Wasserman was also captain of the university’s ski team. He became a newspaper owner in 1958 with the purchase of the Amesbury News. Over the next 30 years or so, Wasserman built North Shore Weeklies, a chain of newspapers that covered communities from Amesbury to Marblehead. He acquired the the Ipswich Chronicle (established 1872) in 1960. Wasserman sold the group in 1986. He came out of retirement to help found a free weekly newspaper. He worked through the first phase of the pandemic and retired again in July 2020, Wasserman also remained politically active and engaged in the Democratic party. He campaigned and raised funds for many candidates, and he and his wife Mary hosted many at their home.
