Paul R. Soglin is serving his sixth term as mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. First elected in 1973, Mayor Soglin served three two-year terms, leaving office in 1979. In 1989 he returned to the mayor's office and was re-elected in 1991 and 1995. Prior to becoming mayor, he served several terms as alderman on the Madison Common Council. Mayor Soglin received his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, going on to complete three years of graduate studies in history before attending law school. He received an LL.B. degree in 1972. From 1979 to 1980 he was a fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government's Institute of Politics at Harvard University. Mayor Soglin is married and is the father of three daughters. Paul R. Soglin is currently practicing law after having spent the last ten years holding public office. In 1968, while a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, he was elected to the Madison Common Council and subsequently re-elevated in 1970 and 1972. In 1973, Mr. Soglin was elevated tot he first of three terms as mayor of Madison. During this same period, Mr. Soglin served on the Community Development and Housing Committee of the United States Conference of Mayors and was a co-founder of the Conference on Alternative State and Local Policies.
