Mr. Summe is a Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Global Buyout at The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, and a member of Carlyle's Operating Committee Prior to joining Carlyle in September 2009, he was the Chairman and CEO of PerkinElmer, Inc., a designer, manufacturer and deliverer of advanced technology solutions addressing health and safety concerns, a company he led for eleven years from 1998 to September 2009. He joined PerkinElmer in January 1998 in the role of President and Chief Operating Officer and in 1999 was elected Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. He also served as a Senior Advisor to Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, a leader in private corporate equity investing, from 2008 to 2009. Prior to joining PerkinElmer, Mr. Summe was with AlliedSignal, now Honeywell International, an inventor and manufacturer of technologies addressing global macrotrend challenges such as safety, security, and energy, serving as the President of General Aviation Avionics, President of the Aerospace Engines Group, and President of the Automotive Products Group. Before joining AlliedSignal, he was the General Manager of Commercial Motors at General Electric and was a Partner with the consulting firm of McKinsey & Company, Inc. Mr. Summe holds B.S., and M.S., degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky and the University of Cincinnati, and an M.B.A., with distinction from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also in the Engineering Hall of Distinction at the University of Kentucky. Mr. Summe currently sits on the boards of Automatic Data Processing Inc., State Street Corporation and several private companies.
