President and Chief Executive Officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, a self-regulatory organization for the bulk electricity system in North America. Mr. Sergel, now age 58, joined NERC in 2005. From 2000 to 2004, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of National Grid USA, an electric and gas utility. Mr. Sergel received a B.S. degree from Florida State University, an M.S. from North Carolina State University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Miami. He served in the United States Air Force. Until 2010, Richard P. Sergel was President and Chief Executive Officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), an organization certified by the U.S. federal government and the Canadian provinces to ensure the reliability of the North American bulk power system. Until 2004, Rick served as President and Chief Executive Officer for National Grid USA, a major Northeast electricity utility serving New England and parts of New York, and was Executive Director of National Grid Group plc for North America, following the completion of the National Grid and New England Electric System (NEES) merger in March 2000. From 1998 through the date of the merger, he was President and CEO of NEES, where he held positions of increasing responsibility since 1979. Rick is presently a director of State Street Corporation and Emera Inc. He has also served on the boards of the Edison Electric Institute, the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, and the United Way of the Merrimac Valley. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Florida State University, a Master of Science in applied mathematics from North Carolina State University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Miami.
