Matthew is a former federal prosecutor and law professor who clerked for two federal judges and handled high-profile cases at Skadden Arps before founding Spertus Landes & Umhofer in 2013. In 2018, Matthew won a trial on behalf of a whistleblowerwho was fired after exposing corruption in a local school district–the jury awarded over $3 million in damages to the whistleblower plaintiffs, and the judge awarded over $5 million in attorneys’ fees. He was named Attorney of the Yearby California Lawyer magazine in 2012 after defeating a False Claims Act case that sought over $600 million in damages. He recently prevailed in a federal appeal defending a non-profit against allegations of health care fraud in excess of $100 million. Matthew started his career working with legend-of-the-bar Plato Cacheris in Washington, D.C. He has tried a over a dozen cases to verdict and handled dozens of appeals. He has prevailed in complex civil matters and criminal cases alike. When not practicing law, Matthew ocean-swims, sings, and plays guitar, all with great enthusiasm and mediocrity.
