John was the founder and CEO of BMC Software, a Texas-based company which wrote software for IBM mainframe computers. In 1994, following the sale of BMC, John moved to California and purchased the San Diego Padres. He was the visionary behind the construction of Petco Park and the revitalization of the East Village District. John has been a major donor to various organizations, including the Carter Center, the University of California, the University of Houston, San Diego State University, the University of San Diego, Emory University, the University of Tennessee, the Scripps Research Institute, MD Anderson and the Innocence Project. He has also been involved with organizations, including: The Boys and Girls Club, Foundation for the Children of the Californias in Tijuana, The San Diego Center for Children, St Vincent de Paul and the San Diego Zoo. A native Texan, John earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and his JD from the University of Houston. He is married to Dr. Dianne Rosenberg and has four children: John Jr., Jennifer, Eddie and Earl.
