Peter Dean is currently Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Western Australia. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre. Peter has an extensive background in education and leadership that includes working with the NSW Department of Education and NSW professional teachers associations. From 2011-2017 Peter worked at The Australian National University where he held numerous positions including: Senior Fellow, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre; Associate Dean Education; Associate Dean Students; and Director of Studies. Prior to The ANU Peter worked on the Sydney campus of the University of Notre Dame Australia, where he held a number of senior roles in education and campus leadership, and prior to this he worked and studied at the University of New South Wales. Peter's major research and teaching interests are in war studies, Australian strategic policy, the ANZUS Alliance, military operations, US strategy in the Indo-Pacific, and defence studies. Peter has been an Endeavour Research Scholar and a Fulbright Fellow in Australia-United States Alliance Studies. In 2011 he was a Research Associate at the United States Studies Centre Sydney University and has been a Senior Fellow the Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies at Georgetown University, Washington DC and an Adjunct Fellow in the Pacific Partners Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC. Along with Brendan Taylor Peter is the creator and series editor of the Melbourne University Press Defence Studies Series. He has served as a managing editor of the journal Security Challenges and sits on the editorial board of Global War Studies and the Australian Army Journal. He has published his work in areas such as: Security Challenges, US Naval War College Review, War & Society, Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, Australian Policy and History and Global War Studies, the East Asia Forum, The Strategist, The Diplomat and The Interpreter. He is also a regular media commentator on Australian and regional defence issues.
