Trea graduated from Wesleyan University. She is the daughter of Nancy and Thomas Hoving, who are partners in Hoving Associates, an arts consulting firm in New York. Mr. Hoving, also an editor and author, is a former New York City Parks Commissioner and director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mrs. Hoving is a founder of the Phoenix House Foundation, a national drug rehabilitation program, in New York. The bride's paternal grandfather, the late Walter Hoving, was the chairman of Tiffany & Company. Her maternal grandfather, Elliott Valence Bell, is a former New York State Superintendent of Banks and publisher and editor of Business Week magazine. She married Colin David Leventhal, the director of acquisition at Channel Four Television Corporation in London and a managing director of its film and television sales in October 1995.
