Cofounder of software outfit Infosys Technologies and longtime chief executive stepped down two years ago to become chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India. Its ambitious mandate is to provide a unique identity number to all Indian residents. Target is to issue 600 million of them by 2014; has issued 2 million so far. Wife Rohini, a former journalist, supports several non-profits in the areas of water, education and micro-finance. Donated $5 million to Yale University and over $1 million to the Indian Institute for Human Settlements, a new university focused on sustainable urbanization in Bangalore.
